Versioning source data for insurance comparison displays
A data-management guide to recording the source and version behind changing comparison displays.
A comparison display can change when source data, definitions or presentation logic is updated. Keeping those changes traceable helps teams explain what information was available and which version appeared at a given point in a workflow.
Record provenance with the data
For each material field, document its source, meaning, update owner and any effective-date convention. Preserve a reference to the source version or retrieval event. Do not make an empty value look like a zero or treat an outdated value as current without evidence.
Make changes reviewable
When a feed or mapping changes, record the old and new version, the reason for the change and the checks performed. If a correction is applied retrospectively, make that fact visible and retain an appropriate audit trail.
Test what users actually see
- Compare a before-and-after example using approved test data.
- Check missing, late and conflicting values.
- Confirm labels still match the data definitions.
- Verify that support teams can trace a displayed value to its source.
Data presentation should be reviewed by the owners responsible for the meaning of each insurance field. This is generic information-governance guidance; it does not compare products, assess cover or recommend an insurance option.
