Assigning data ownership across a commercial insurance marketplace
A practical data-governance approach for making ownership, source and correction paths clear across a marketplace workflow.
When information moves between participants in a commercial insurance marketplace, people need to know where it came from, who maintains it and how a correction is handled. Clear data ownership helps teams resolve questions without assuming that every participant uses the same definition.
Record the source and steward
For each important data item, identify the originating source, the team responsible for its accuracy and the authorised users who can view or update it. Note the applicable definition and effective date where those matter to the workflow.
Make updates traceable
Describe how a submitted update is checked, accepted, rejected or left unresolved. Preserve a reference to the prior value and the reason for a change according to approved retention rules. Make correction routes visible so users can direct questions to the right owner.
Handle gaps and conflicts explicitly
- Distinguish missing information from a confirmed negative value.
- Show which source is being used when records disagree.
- Record unresolved items with an owner and next action.
- Review access, retention and correction permissions.
Marketplace participants and accountable product, broker and compliance owners must define what each field means and which source governs a particular decision.
