Designing actionable validation errors for insurance APIs
A technical guide to making API validation errors specific, consistent and safe to act on.
Validation errors are part of an API contract. A useful response helps a client identify what needs correction while avoiding ambiguity about whether the request was processed.
Return stable, machine-readable detail
Use a documented error code and a consistent structure for the affected field or object. Keep codes stable across releases where the meaning has not changed. Human-readable messages can add context, but client behavior should not depend on parsing improvised prose.
Explain the correction safely
Describe the input condition that failed and the permitted next action according to the API specification. Do not echo secrets or unnecessary personal information in the response. Distinguish malformed input from authorization, availability and downstream processing failures.
Make processing state clear
- Identify whether the request was rejected before processing.
- Use correlation references for support and diagnostics.
- Document retry behavior instead of implying every error is retryable.
- Test unknown fields, invalid formats, boundary values and partial failures.
Review the contract with provider and client teams, then test how errors appear in logs and user-facing interfaces. Keep technical validation separate from insurance eligibility or underwriting interpretation.
