Idempotency and retries in insurance quote APIs

Design retry behaviour that avoids duplicate quote requests and confusing outcomes.

Network timeouts leave a caller unsure whether a request was processed. Retrying without a defined duplicate strategy can create repeated work or inconsistent records. For operations that may be repeated, agree an idempotency key, its scope and how long the receiver retains it.

Design the workflow

Specify which errors are retryable, how backoff is applied and when the caller must stop and seek a status check. A retry should preserve the original request identity and must not turn an unknown result into a new transaction. Responses should make it clear whether the result is new, repeated or still pending.

Test and govern

Test delayed responses, connection loss after processing, duplicate keys with changed payloads and retries after the retention window. Monitor retry rates and unresolved requests. Document the recovery path for both parties so operational teams can reconcile an uncertain submission without guessing.

Define the source of truth, accountable owner and exception path before implementation. Test representative scenarios and retain the evidence needed to review outcomes. This practical guidance does not make a claim about a specific VYPR product capability.
