Versioning insurance APIs without breaking integrations
A change-management approach for evolving insurance API contracts safely.
An API contract evolves as products, data and processes change. A safe approach distinguishes compatible additions from changes that alter meaning, requiredness or response behaviour. Document the contract version and keep example requests and responses alongside the specification.
Design the workflow
Before release, identify affected consumers and test them against the proposed contract. Use explicit deprecation notices and an agreed support period for breaking changes. Where versions coexist, define routing, support ownership and how old versions will be monitored and retired.
Test and govern
Do not treat a successful schema validation as proof that business meaning is preserved. Test boundary values, error responses, retries and duplicate requests. Capture a correlation identifier and version in operational logs. A rollback plan should restore compatible behaviour or route traffic safely if a consumer cannot process the change.
Define the source of truth, accountable owner and exception path before implementation. Test representative scenarios and retain the evidence needed to review outcomes. This practical guidance does not make a claim about a specific VYPR product capability.
