Rating engine or policy system: deciding where a rule belongs

Use ownership, change cadence and lifecycle context to place insurance rules.

Rules can sit in several parts of an insurance technology estate. The right boundary depends on what the rule means, who governs it, how often it changes and which journeys rely on it. Avoid placing the same decision in multiple systems without an explicit source of truth.

Design the workflow

List the inputs, outputs, effective dates and users of the rule. Consider whether it calculates a value, validates a policy state, routes work or controls a document. Define how the result is explained and how changes are tested across connected services.

Test and govern

Compare options against auditability, operational ownership, performance needs and failure handling. Document a single accountable owner and the contract between systems. Test changes end to end and confirm that old and new versions behave as intended. The goal is a clear boundary that can be governed, not a universal architecture rule.

Define the source of truth, accountable owner and exception path before implementation. Test representative scenarios and retain the evidence needed to review outcomes. This practical guidance does not make a claim about a specific VYPR product capability.
